Michigan State University: Summer Journalism Workshop July - August

Michigan Interscholastic Press Association

East Lansing, Michigan

Price: $425 (early bird rate): includes lodging, food, top notch class instructor; fun

July 28 - August 1, 2019

Each summer, for five days, the MIPA summer workshop offers an opportunity for your student to not only master a facet of journalism, but to become a leader in the classroom and have a once in a lifetime opportunity at one of the best camps in the nation. I would say most Michigan advisers agree-- MIPA camp makes a HUGE difference when starting a school year and throughout the school year in general. Whether you send one or 20 kids to camp, you know those students will be on-board with you and help get the rest of your staff rolling. It is a win-win for both adviser and students.

Classes range from yearbook theme development, leadership for editors, specialized writing courses in sports, feature, opinion, and news writing with Bobby Hawthorne. We have beginning and advanced InDesign classes, infographic and Illustrator courses. Not to mention we cover websites, photography and basic intro to writing and design classes. Have a graduating senior? Our Upstart staff would be a perfect fit. In the class, students cover the workshop and post multiple stories/photos daily about the camp. The train and bus station are 100 feet from campus, so travelers from out of state need not worry about getting to workshop. There is also a shuttle directly from the Detroit airport to campus, along with a smaller airport right in Lansing.
